My "First" Mother's Day

One year ago this weekend, I didn't think I'd see a Mother's Day. We were Maui and were at a show the night before. I started feeling really crampy on our way home. It progressed and became overwhelmingly painful over the night. I finally fell asleep and woke up to my usual morning sickness. It was Mother's Day and I was excited that I was able to celebrate Mother's Day as a mommy-to-be. The excitement quickly ended when I went to the bathroom and noticed blood. I freaked out and we called the advice nurse immediately. Unfortunately, it was a Sunday and regular facilities were closed so we had to go to the ER on the other side of the island. I cried and cried and prayed like nobodies business. I was so scared that I was having a miscarriage. By the time we got to the hospital I was a complete mess. I used the restroom there and noticed even more bright red blood and began sobbing. It was the worst feeling I had ever felt in my life. I hadn't ever met the baby growing inside of me and had only known of their existence for a few short weeks, but I was madly in love and had dreamt up what our lives were going to be like with a little one expanding our family. I was so scared that that life was going to be ripped away from us.

It was only an ER doctor, and not an obgyn, so the care was pretty basic. They ran some blood tests to confirm the pregnancy, but pretty much told me that if I was having a miscarriage that there was nothing they could do to stop it at this early stage. I was advised to be on pelvic rest until the next day where I would then meet with an obgyn and have an ultrasound. We traveled home worried and scared, but continued to pray that God's will would be done. We stopped by Pizza Hut (of all places in Maui!) and drove home where I parked it on the couch for the rest of the evening... no Mother's Day festivities... just holding on to my tummy cherishing that time, if short lived, with my baby...

... to be continued...
